A filling is necessary when decay has destroyed part of the tooth. The dentist needs to remove the decay and then place a material to recreate the shape of the missing tooth structure. We consider composite resin, also called white fillings, to be the filling material of choice as composite fillings preserve the natural tooth structure and are more aesthetic than amalgam, silver, fillings.
